"Der schnaubende Wolf" ist eine "True Story", in der Autor Wolfgang Bankowsky seinen Kampf gegen die chronische obstruktive Bronchitis im täglichen Leben beschreibt. Die auch als "Raucherkrankheit" bezeichnete COPD ist unheilbar und mittlerweile zur Volkskrankheit mutiert. Wenngleich auch die Dunkelziffer hoch ist. Bankowsky schildert seine Wege, die er fand, um Etappensiege gegen die oft von Erstickungsanfällen begleitete Krankheit zu erlangen. COPD geht oft mit Immunschwäche einher. Auch Depressionen sind häufig. Der Autor schreibt, wie er es geschafft hat, bis auf eine Ausnahme zu Beginn der Erkrankung weitere Aufenthalte in den Intensivstationen zu vermeiden. Er recherchierte und probierte viel, kam auf neue ergänzende Behandlungsmethoden, die ihm Erleichterung verschafften und das heute noch tun.

Das schönste Kompliment machte ihm ein Jahr vor Erscheinen des Buches sein Linzer Lungenfacharzt: "Sie haben es bisher geschafft, die ansonsten massiven Verschlechterungen der unheilbaren Krankheit COPD zu vermeiden. Ihr Status ist trotz der höchsten Stufe der Erkrankung gut, zumindest nie schlechter als vor elf Jahren geworden. Schreiben sie nieder, wie sie es machen und motivieren sie ihre Leidensgenossinnen und -genossen."
